On March 31, 2020, the directors turned to Zoom meetings, running sectionals for members who participated on their phones, notepads and computers.  After a few weeks, full Zoom rehearsals began and featured special guests, including Joe Cerutti and Tony DeRosa, well-known in the Barbershop Harmony Society.  These rehearsals included singing as well as discussions.  Guests led warmups, made presentations and answered questions.  Members were able to participate vocally in warmups, rehearsal of contest and show music with the aid of learning tracks, and watch videos.

In July 2020, the SOI board did a member survey to determine the willingness to return to in-person rehearsals and under what conditions.  A mixed return indicated enough willing members to try in-person rehearsals if precautions were observed.  On Aug. 18, on the outdoor grounds of Calvary Acres in Normal the first in person gathering of members in five months took place.  The evening meetings continued into fall, until darkness became an issue.  To accommodate members who did not wish to chance group meetings, the board arranged for meetings to be shared via Zoom with those who stayed home.

On Jan. 11, 2022, SOI announced it would present a spring show May 14, 2022, at Heartland Community College in Normal.  That show would be the first in two years because of restrictions caused by the pandemic.  Adam Shake, the group’s president, said he was “beyond excited” to announce the spring show, which would follow mask and distancing guidelines in effect at that time.
