In July 2020, the SOI board did a member survey to determine the willingness to return to in-person rehearsals and under what conditions. A mixed return indicated enough willing members to try in-person rehearsals if precautions were observed. On Aug. 18, on the outdoor grounds of Calvary Acres in Normal the first in person gathering of members in five months took place. The evening meetings continued into fall, until darkness became an issue. To accommodate members who did not wish to chance group meetings, the board arranged for meetings to be shared via Zoom with those who stayed home. | In July 2020, the SOI board did a member survey to determine the willingness to return to in-person rehearsals and under what conditions. Second Presbyterian Church was not yet open to outside groups. A number of men indicated they would join in person after receiving the vaccine. Answering a request for help from the president and directors, Jim Waldorf approached Inchol Chong, Reality Bites manager, and Owner Butch Thompson, about renting space in their meeting facility at Reality on Monroe. Not only did they offer the space, they insisted on donating it to help our cause. It fit SOI needs, except when the facility was rented, and the Reality folks offered their Daddios location on North Main as a substitute. Waldorf also approached the owner of Parke Regency Hotel, Krishna Balakrishna, about using a ballroom for rehearsals when the other locations were unavailable. He offered to donate the space for our use, which we accepted several times. "It's gratifying to have community supporters so willing to help us out," Waldorf says. | ||
Thanks to the technical expertise and equipment provided by President Adam Shake and Secretary Tony Meizelis, and the Zoom expertise of our directors, all members had the opportunity to stay involved whether the meeting was outside or inside. | Thanks to the technical expertise and equipment provided by President Adam Shake and Secretary Tony Meizelis, and the Zoom expertise of our directors, all members had the opportunity to stay involved whether the meeting was outside or inside. |
